Leaving Home, Coming Home, though, has a peculiar problem: It’s so good that one wants more of it. Cocksucker Blues, Frank’s infamous and largely unseen documentary about the Rolling Stones, who objected to the filmmaker’s portrait of them (something to which Frank can now obviously relate) is too fleetingly discussed. And more time could’ve been devoted to simply allowing the audience to see Frank’s photographs, which are haunting documents of the beauty and loneliness of life, whether in the city, the American South, or the tranquil landscapes of Nova Scotia. Beautiful loneliness, as Leaving Home, Coming Home suggestively reveals, is a texture that Frank knows all too well.

The twists in this narrative also activate some of Bong’s more inspired and sociopolitically loaded visual ideas. At one point in the film, the slum village where Ki-taek and his family live is devastated by a massive flood during a night of severe weather. Meanwhile, in the upper-class neighborhood where the Park clan lives, a backyard camping trip is ruined by rain. The particular layout of one unexpected setting, which sees members of the lower class literally occupying a space below the rich, doubles as an ingenious metaphor for class subjugation. Remarkably, Bong even finds room for a commentary on Korean peninsula relations.

Ma isn’t hiding anything resembling Norman Bates’s mother up there. That plot point is basically a red herring, but Ma’s motives are ulterior, as she grew up in this town, with these kids’ parents, who humiliated her in the ‘80s with a prank, in front of almost the entire school, that crossed the line into assault. She’s a bottled-up Carrie-type who’s been waiting 30 years to explode. When she recognizes one of Maggie’s new friends as the son of her chief bully, Ben (Luke Evans), she begins plotting a baroque revenge against her peers and their progeny. The film unfolds slowly, though, as a simmering character piece about the secrets of small towns.

A story with the complex interplay between the intimately personal and the globally political comes across as a playful provocation worthy of the director of Hi, Mom! and Blow Out, but Domino is an auteurist-as-journeyman high-wire act that feels weirdly free-associative, as if its ligaments were all in the wrong place. In a formally impressive split-screen sequence, we glimpse a suicide bomber’s head-cam point of view on the right, and on the left news footage of a film festival’s red-carpet event where the bomber is lurking about. Presented as a live video being watched in real time on a laptop by the terrorist plotters, the sequence climaxes as a spectacle of glamor and gore, pointing to our own culpability as voyeurs in a culture of violence. Yet the story and characters surrounding this brutal moment are so devoid of richness and energy that the set piece, which suggests a directorial gesture occurring in a vacuum, doesn’t pull off the perversely incendiary effect that De Palma no doubt intended.
